US Secret Service Adopts Glock 19, G47 For Duty Pistol

It’s confirmed, the US Secret Service has adopted the Glock 19 G47 MOS Gen 5 pistol as it’s service pistol. As you may recall since 1998 the Sig P229 was the duty pistol of choice in .357, which offered a smaller frame and the stopping power that the .357 brought. It might seem a bit odd to go from the raw force, of a .357 to a smaller 9mm round, however don’t be so quick to judge.

Since 1998, the technology for bullets have allowed the stopping power of a 9mm to increase quite a bit. The FBI released a study about the effectiveness of the 9mm over other calibers, and in doing so changed their own duty pistols to 9mms as well. The 9mm is no longer the low man on the totem pole of calibers, it can hold its own against other calibers such as the .40 S&W.

Earlier this year the US Customs and Border Patrol announced an $85 million contract to Glock for the G47. So is this just the next trends in law enforcement protection?
